Our Artists

Cynthia van de Loo

Cynthia van de Loo developed creative skills at a young age from parents who were both artists.  She has a background in television & documentary production, with three years training from Diage Multimedia, meanwhile pursuing studies in photography and art through Canterbury University and with individual artist mentors.  She then moved into working full time as a professional photographer and as a contemporary fine artist.  She has exhibited in 14 solo shows and 5 group shows throughout New Zealand, as well as ‘l’art est vivant’ in New Caledonia and Icosahedron Gallery in Chelsea, New York.   Cynthia has been acquiring skills in cast-glass making at the School of Art and Design, Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology and in Silversmithing / Casting at NMIT Nelson.  Over the past many years creating large art installations have also been part of Cynthia’s work, working solo and also with a Christchurch team “In Good Form”

Creating art and working in the medium of photography allows me to capture everything that is available to us in the external world – “the world of form”.  Visually I am inspired by both organic and structured life forms that surround us.

After exploring many facets of photography, I found myself wanting to express the inner world of formless experiences through my art into a form, which meant exploring new mediums needed to come into play.  Starting with oils, introducing acrylics and then slowly other mediums.   I worked in a 2D format for many years.  Still doing some photography, but the larger percentage of my work was contemporary fine art on canvas, aluminium, glass and board.  I love experimenting with many different materials, textures and shapes, seeing how I can get them to voice my expression. The latest body of work is bringing all levels of consciousness together, showing the connectedness, encompassing the internal and external worlds.  To express this I felt like there was a need to bring in 3D forms creating symbols and metaphors, combined with materials from the earth and a human content captured by photography and image transfers.  The world as we know it is a mix of 2 and 3D with many layers and what is created out of me is a reflection of that.

There have been uses of many diverse mediums on different surfaces in previous art works; from oils & acrylic to metal & volcanic rock. They have all been a wonderful bases for her  art works. The latest art works are exploring a mix or 2D and 3D sculptures/wall mountings. They encompass mediums such as Kiln Cast Glass, Aluminum, Acrylic Plastic's, Steel, metal powders and photographic transfers.
