John was born in Timaru and spent the first 20 years of his life there. He began drawing at an early age and his school exercise books were liberally embellished with cartoon drawings and figures and animals.
On leaving school John joined a bank and took life drawing lessons at night to further his interest in all aspects of art. After five years in the bank he moved to Christchurch to take up a position as a junior artist in an advertising agency. Fourteen years later John quit as Creative Director of the agency to concentrate on easel painting with graphic design as an additional source of income.
Painting the New Zealand landscape in both oils and watercolours has been his vocation ever since. He has been involved in many successful exhibitions and has work hanging worldwide.
John has taken inspiration in recent years from trips to Europe that have provided exotic locations such as hilltop towns of France, Italy, coastal Croatia, bustling Istanbul, sensational Santorini, the Austrian and Swiss Alps plus the timeless beauty of Venice.
